Fruit Machine

I did these Fruit Machine poster designs for our external show press pack - not sure if they will get used yet or not but they were based on our show name 'Mixed Special' and the idea that our class has is a mixed bunch of fruit (hah) - at the degree show audiences wont know what they are getting because illustration is such a varied subject...

Shoes

Never drawn shoes really before but I was asked to have a go for a friend of a friend who is making a fashion magazine and this was the out-come. She wanted some sketches of shoe trends for men and gave me loafers, deck shoes and brogues. Not sure how they will be used if at all yet but was fun to have a go.

Saturday Drawing Club with Marion Deuchars

I've been doing some really interesting stuff with the Saturday drawing club recently. Last week we had the illustrator Marion Deuchars come in and give the kids a masterclass. It was like being back in pre school in really good way and it made everyone think about being creative with materials. Charlotte Jones and I  mixed some pretty nice colours for everyone to use - Charlottes off yellow was AMAZING. It kind of made simple hand painting and butterfly printing look better because the colours were not the average primary ones straight out of the tube.

Today we went to South bank and did some observational drawing. I really miss doing this kind of stuff. Then we went to the David Shrigley and Jeremy Deller Exhibitions at the Hayward which was fun plus we got free tea in the replica cafe by Deller.

Finished Kites

Been on a road trip round england last week with my sister as she had some uni open days. It was fun but a little stressful as I had forgotten how bad I am at driving. Was good to get out of london for a week though I feel ready for the final stress of my degree now (i think...?). Here are some photos of the finished Kites I made for Hobbs. Im still keen to develop one design further and work with some ripstop (kite fabric) to make it so you could actually fly them. For the hobbs window display idea the paper ones worked better though as they held their shape when suspended. Unfortunately transporting them to the head offices of Hobbs for the presentation didn't do them much good and a lot of the wood snapped on the tube... Have to solve the broken kite problem for hand in somehow. Luckily I have some pictures to show them in their 'pre central line in rush hour' state.

Animal box kite prototypes

I have been making all sorts of different kites using some of my fashion illustrations blown up large onto tracing paper- these are going ok but I have no decent photos yet. However in the process of researching and making different kites I discovered the box kite which I decided to make into some little playful animals. Not sure if they would actually fly but would be ok for display. These are just some prototypes at the moment, I think if I go ahead and develop them i would make them out of proper silk Nylon and have to put wire into the legs and tail to hold them out.

This is what a plain box kite looks like in flight:

I kind of created a predicament for myself though as I have two completely different avenues to go down with the kites. I think the Animal ones are probably too cutesy for Hobbs but I still kind of like them... More to follow on the simpler illustrated kites.

Some Chilli Peppers

Thinking of making some wrapping paper from these...

OH DAMN

For my Hobbs project I am planning on making some kites and when I was telling Harriette about it she told me about the Illustrator Daniel Frost who has made some really nice ones. I recognise his work from a lot of places (think he has illustrated for guardian) but had never seen his Kites before. I really love his colour palette and the compositions of the kites is so clever. Just having one of those 'I really wish I did that' moments and now need to work out a way to progress without feeling like I have copied his idea. My drawing is really different though so should be ok...
